it has begun!

Well, after my first post, I have started back into getting my butt into gear. I ran my first 5k distance - in a whopping 35min. Could this be an indication I have finally hit rock bottom?

Keep in mind, my run was during one of the coldest days in Ottawa. I did not have my dog to keep the pace, and I felt like I was a chain smoker- my lungs could not handle a complete 5k run in one shot.

However, it was fun. From that point, I decided the following day (Monday) to run again. I completed only 3k - but 3k is better than nothing. I felt energized!

Tuesday was spinning - first class of the year. I did great (to my standards), did not get injured, and am craving to go back. Could I have done a double? most likely!

Next week is a new week.

Day 1: Setting the foundation

Time to face the facts.

It has been awhile since I have started to work out - due to injuries, procrastination, bad eating habits, lack of motivation... the list goes on. It dawned upon me yesterday that by now, the gyms have probably died down, and the newbies are gone. No better time to jump back in than now.

BUT, before I jump back in, I have to outline what I plan to accomplish over 2011.

This year will be the 'year of the 1/2.' I will work towards completing a 1/2 marathon, improving my endurance, speed, efficiency, and overall performance.

It took several years for me to reach my peek performance (back in 2007-2008) where I was able to complete a half in just over 1hour 30 min. Two years ago (2009), due to lack of training, I accomplished a half marathon in 2 hours 2 min. It was a cruel reality that the lack of training, bad eating habits, and lack of motivation caused this downward spiral.

Learning from my mistakes, I can only move forward. I will try to accomplish the following in 2011 (among other fitness goals - listed below).

Running goals:
Complete races during the following months:

April - 10k
May - 1/2 marathon
September - 1/2 marathon
October - 1/2 marathon
December - 10k race

Although I have certain races in mind, I will not list them yet. I first have to confirm with the wife & son, and also determine if it is within our financial means to do this.

IN addition, I want to strongly finish my courses (both CanFitPro & maddog spinning) to become a certified spinning instructor. In order to complete the following, I need to instruct a class by May 2011 (CanFitPro requirements), and complete an online exam (Maddog spinning). Sounds easy enough, right? In order to do that, it would require hours of practical practice.

With that being said- each month, I hope to accomplish the following:

spinning: complete 7 classes (in 30ish days) - that is possible
classes: attend/participate in 7 classes (in 30ish days) -- where two MUST include a yoga class.

Am I setting my goals too high?

I know I am not. This is just outside my reach. It would require tons of dedication, discipline, and time management.

With that, Bring it on!
